When we look around the world, we can find children playing all kinds of different sports activities. It might be a sport that is known worldwide, nationally, or it might be one they made up with friends. They could even be playing a sport all alone, but sports are all throughout our world today. Through sports, children are able to play and learn about their world and how things interact and work together. They develop social skills by determining how to interact with others around them. Sports are a great way for children to explore their world around them and to learn to be creative while doing it.

Here is a list of the benefits children will learn from being involved in athletics:

  1. Playing sports promote physical activity as well as physical health. Athletics help you lose weight and stay in good physical shape helping to prevent disease. Athletics also reduce the rate of childhood obesity because it promotes healthy physical activity. It gets kids up off the couch and running around. It also helps aid physical health throughout one’s life and not simply just during one’s youth.
  2. Sports also promote healthy eating habits in order to have the energy needed to perform all of the tasks of the activity they are participating. Through sports children learn how to eat a healthy and balanced diet. They learn what they need to eat in order to have the energy to participate in their sport. The knowledge of how to eat well can last a lifetime.
  3. Physical activity provided by sports is shown to improve mental health also. Physical activity decreases depression and increases the pleasure pathways in the brain. It also has been shown to decrease anxiety and increase self-esteem. Children have the opportunity to hear positive praise from coaches, parents and teammates while engaging in these extracurricular events. They also learn to build and strengthen their own abilities, and, furthermore, they learn to trust others will do their part.
  4. As mentioned above, sports create an environment to allow youngsters to master social skills by interacting with other children. Youth develop teamwork skills by playing sports with others, and they learn to make commitments and follow through with tasks. Kids can learn leadership skills, how to share, how to follow instructions as well as effective communication techniques by participating in athletics. Sports also help little ones learn to follow rules and boundaries established to keep them safe. Playing sports teach young ones to take steps and build a foundation to grow, get stronger, get better and reach goals. It teaches teamwork and that everyone has to work together to effectively reach goals. Sports teach children that life is not always fair, and they do not always end with a win. It teaches kids to lose, but to hold their heads up high and be proud of oneself for trying hard and giving their best.
  5. Lastly, coaches and teachers can aid children in developing healthy methods of conflict resolution when a problem arises. Sports promote training children about healthy ways to deal with and resolve rivalries. One may experience conflict with a teammate or a person from an opposing team. They may also struggle getting along with a coach or teacher. However, their coaches can aid them in solving tensions and other problems in the most effective way possible. Moreover, sports build relationships across cultural, economic and social divides. Youngsters can learn to integrate these different cultures through sports to lessen the cultural divides and stigmas among these groups as well.

Overall, youngsters apply all these characteristics they learn while playing sports into their everyday lives. These skills will teach them many personality traits that can last them a lifetime.
